Each year, the community of Gran Chemin, Moruga, has watched the increasing wave action of the sea along their section of coastline.
This year, Morugans are witnessing the most intensive erosion in their history as heavier-than-usual surf is not only dashing on the beach but past the beach into the area of man-made structures fringing the town.
One of the structures now under threat of collapse is the statue of St Peter. The 30-foot- high statue was erected by the St Vincent Ferrer Society on June 29, 2012. It stands at the end of the road, a dominating sculpture that is used by visitors to pinpoint the access area to the beach and by fishermen as a landmark to the town. Read more...

SOME of the most expensive and coveted real estate in Trinidad and Tobago hugs the country’s coastline.
No surprise here since you would be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t want to roll out of bed each morning to the view of a horizon (or in the case of west coast residents, the outline of South America).
Which is why a lot of the rich people have bought up and hoarded beachfront land from Charlotteville to Cedros, building second houses as weekend escapes, guest houses, or old age retreats.
An exception to this is the south coast Moruga villages between Grand Chemin and Marac, where residents and outsiders are not particularly interested in living, or developing anything too close to the sea. Read more...

Mooring of boats on to Moruga bridge weakening supports the last ‘spring bridge’ in Trinidad

The structure of the last functioning ‘spring bridge’ in Trinidad is now under threat of collapse once more, this time via the weakening of the steel on to which boats large and small are being moored.
In 1993 the collapse of rotting planks on the bridge resulted in several families becoming marooned on the eastern side. Fishermen in the area used their pirogues as transportation across the river to assist those affected. New planks were subsequently laid to restore full usage of the bridge by pedestrians and vehicular traffic. The towers and suspension cables remained intact.
This time, the imminent collapse of the bridge a second time is not seen to be caused by non-maintenance or accident but by intentional mooring of boats on to the steel parts of the bridge. Because this area is quite close to the sea, the problem is made worse by the daily rise and ebb of the tides. When the tide is falling, the persistent pull of the ropes against the steel weakens the structure of the bridge. Read more...
